Anyone else feel the quiet freeze on hiring and promos?

Is it just my department, or is the mood across the yards shifting lately? I’ve noticed a lot of our open reqs are just sitting there—they aren't being canceled, but they aren't moving to offer stages either. We’ve had a few folks leave recently and management is suddenly acting like we can just absorb the extra workload indefinitely. It feels like the classic 'pre-layoff' energy where they start tightening the belt without actually announcing a reduction in force. I've been with HII for over five years and usually, things ebb and flow with the contract cycles, but this feels different. The communication from leadership has been extremely sparse, and the 'do more with less' rhetoric is hitting an all-time high. I’m just trying to gauge if I should be tightening my own financial belt or if this is just standard contract-awaiting jitters. Any insight from the Newport News or Ingalls side would be appreciated.

Same energy in my shop, honestly. We’ve had a few departures that were never backfilled, and leadership is just pushing us to pick up the slack without a word about backfills or adjustments. It’s definitely noticeable. The silence from HR on these open reqs is the most frustrating part because it feels like we’re being set up to fail while they wait for the official word from upstairs. I’ve seen this pattern before, and it rarely ends with a hiring spree. Just keep your head down and document everything while the uncertainty hangs over the yard.

I haven't noticed much of a freeze in my area, to be fair. We actually just brought on a few new contractors last month, so it might really depend on which program or shipyard you’re tied to right now. I know the budget cycles can be a nightmare to navigate, and sometimes these pauses are just administrative backlog rather than something more sinister. Don't stress too much about 'pre-layoff' vibes just yet; usually, the rumor mill kicks into high gear well before anything concrete happens. Just focus on your current tasks and ride it out.
