I’ve been reading the tea leaves lately and honestly, I don't like what I’m seeing at HII. We keep hearing about 'efficiencies' and 'streamlining,' which we all know is corporate-speak for cutting headcount once the current phase of the program wraps up. The overtime has been slashed across the board in my shop, and we’re being told to strictly stick to 40 hours. When they start cutting OT, you know they’re preparing the books for something else. I’ve started polishing my resume and looking at defense contractors in the area, just in case. It’s a shame because the work itself is meaningful, but the instability of these contract-dependent cycles is starting to take a toll on my mental health. Does anyone know if there’s a genuine risk of a RIF in the coming quarter, or am I just being paranoid? I’d hate to leave a secure pension-track job if it's just business as usual, but I’d hate even more to be the last one left if the axe finally drops.

It’s not just your shop. I’ve seen the same pattern across the yard over the last few months. When the leadership starts preaching about 'operational excellence' and pulling the plug on overtime, it’s rarely because they’re suddenly flush with cash or ahead of schedule. They are definitely tightening the belt to make the quarterly reports look better for shareholders. If you’ve got the skills, there’s no reason to stay loyal to a company that views you as a line item on a spreadsheet. Better to jump now while you still have the leverage of an active clearance and current experience.
