ITW - Thoughts on the company culture and work-life balance?

Hi all, I'm considering a role at ITW and trying to get a better feel for the day-to-day reality. I've read a lot about their "80/20" philosophy and decentralized structure, which sounds interesting on paper, but I'm curious how that translates to culture and work-life balance across different segments. Does it feel like a high-pressure environment, or is there a more sustainable pace? I've seen some mixed reviews online, some praising the autonomy and others mentioning long hours or siloed operations. What's the general vibe? Especially interested in hearing from people who have been there for a while. Any insights would be super helpful as I weigh my options. Thanks!

ITW can be quite varied depending on the specific division and management. In some areas, the decentralized nature really does mean autonomy and flexibility, allowing teams to operate efficiently without excessive bureaucracy. This can lead to a good work-life balance if your direct leadership champions it. However, in other segments, the '80/20' might manifest as a constant push for optimization and results, which can definitely ramp up the pressure and lead to longer hours. It's worth trying to speak with people in the *exact* division you're considering if possible.

I've found ITW's culture to be a bit of a mixed bag, much like you've read. The decentralized model is real, and if you land with a good team and supportive manager, it's empowering. You get a lot of ownership. But that autonomy can also mean a lack of standardized support or consistent expectations across the board. Some places are fantastic for work-life balance, while others seem to expect you to be available around the clock, especially during peak project times. It really does come down to the specific business unit.
