The shift toward centralized procurement is a classic sign of the corporate playbook they always run before a major restructuring. You aren't crazy for being nervous; the silence on the internal boards usually precedes the biggest announcements. When they start pushing aggressive targets with slashed resources, it is almost always a tactic to justify thinning the herd further. Keep your head down, update your resume, and don't take the 'doing more with less' talk personally—it is just management speak for trying to inflate the stock price before they decide your department is redundant.
I have been with IP for over a decade, and this cycle is starting to feel exactly like the last time things went south. They love to dangle these impossible quarterly targets to squeeze every drop of productivity out of us before announcing the next round of layoffs. It is completely unsustainable. Honestly, if you are already seeing the red flags in your department, start looking elsewhere now. There is no loyalty from the top, and trying to carry the load of three people for a company that views you as a line item is a losing game.
