Is the 'performance review' process feeling more aggressive lately?

Is it just me, or has the feedback loop become significantly more toxic lately? I’ve been at Invesco for a few years, and my recent review felt like a scripted exercise in finding reasons to justify a lower rating. My manager was barely making eye contact and kept emphasizing 'alignment with current strategy,' which is a massive pivot from last year's goals. I have a gut feeling they are building a paper trail to facilitate a round of 'performance-based' departures so they can avoid the headache of a formal layoff announcement. It’s making the office culture unbearable. Everyone is walking on eggshells and productivity has plummeted because nobody wants to stick their neck out. If you’re seeing this in your department, please sound off.

I’ve been seeing the exact same thing across different departments. It feels like they are suddenly moving the goalposts to fit a narrative that didn't exist six months ago. When the focus shifts from actual output to vague buzzwords like 'alignment' or 'strategic fit,' it is usually a sign that leadership is looking for ways to trim headcount without calling it a layoff. Keep your head down, document everything you do, and start updating your resume just in case. They definitely want a paper trail for exits.

Honestly, this is standard corporate theater. When management gets quiet or starts acting like a programmed bot during reviews, they have likely already been handed a quota from HR. It is incredibly demoralizing to watch years of hard work get discarded because the company wants to rebrand your performance as a strategic mismatch. Don’t take it personally; it’s a numbers game. Use your remaining time to leverage your internal connections before they decide to pull the plug.
