Anyone else noticing the back-to-office push intensifying?

Is it just me, or does the push to get everyone back into the office full-time feel like a precursor to a headcount reduction? Over the last few weeks, the rhetoric from leadership has shifted from 'collaboration' to 'performance tracking.' I’ve noticed a lot more scrutiny on badge swipes and desk time compared to earlier this year. Every time I walk past an empty conference room or see someone packing up at 5:00 PM, I get this sinking feeling that we’re being audited for a future layoff list. It’s hard to focus on the actual work when you feel like you’re being surveilled for non-compliance. Has anyone else picked up on this vibe in their specific department, or is my paranoia getting the better of me?

The Smucker campus culture has definitely shifted lately. It used to feel like they prioritized the 'family' aspect, but now the heavy monitoring of badge swipes feels cold and calculated. It’s hard not to look at your coworkers and wonder if we’re all just numbers being prepared for a spreadsheet exercise. When the focus pivots this hard to surveillance, you have to assume the worst is coming down the pipe before the end of the fiscal year.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is a strategic move to trim the fat without having to deal with severance packages. If you make the office environment miserable and track every minute of their day, people will start quitting on their own. It’s a classic move at larger legacy companies. Watching the transition from flexible work to micromanagement is a massive red flag. Keep your resume updated, because those empty desks are exactly what they want to see to justify the next round of cuts.
