Travel and expense budget getting slashed to nothing

Is it just my division, or is the crackdown on travel and non-essential spend getting insane? I tried to book a standard conference trip that has been approved for years, and it got kicked back by finance three times before being flat-out denied. They’re claiming it’s 'fiscal responsibility,' but it feels like we’re preparing for a massive hit to the bottom line. Every time they start tightening the belt this aggressively, a round of restructuring usually follows six months later. I’ve noticed a lot of our project budgets are being frozen mid-stream, and it’s making it impossible to actually deliver on our KPIs. Anyone else seeing these T&E restrictions, or are they just singling out my department?

It is definitely happening across the board. I have been with the company for a while now, and this exact pattern of sudden, aggressive travel freezes always precedes a major shift in headcount. When finance starts obsessing over minor conference costs, it usually means the quarterly targets are significantly off, and they are trying to pad the margins before the next earnings call. Start polishing your resume now, because the 'restructuring' narrative is almost certainly being drafted behind closed doors as we speak.

Honestly, I think you are overreacting. Tightening the budget is standard practice whenever there is a shift in leadership or a change in our procurement priorities. Smucker has always been conservative with spending during transition periods, and it does not automatically mean the sky is falling. If you are worried, just keep your head down and focus on your core KPIs. Most of these restrictions are just temporary hurdles to ensure we hit our annual goals without having to cut deeper into actual project budgets.
