Wondering about severance if things do shake out...

Worked in supply chain for J.M. Smucker for 8 years. Love the company culture historically, but the recent market shifts and competitor actions have me a little nervous. We haven't had any official word, but there's been a lot of talk and some hiring freezes in non-essential areas. If layoffs do happen, what's a realistic severance package to expect? I've heard good things about Smucker being fair in the past, but times are different. Thinking about my mortgage and family, you know? Anyone on here who's been through a layoff at Smucker before, or has experience from other CPG companies, what did you get? Any advice on negotiating if it comes to that?

Hey there, I totally get your anxiety. It's tough when you love a place but see potential storm clouds gathering. Smucker has a pretty solid reputation for taking care of their people, especially long-term employees like yourself. Historically, they've been known to offer decent severance, often a week or two per year of service, plus continued health benefits for a period. Don't discount those past experiences just yet, though I agree, it's wise to be prepared. Maybe check if your employee handbook has any general language about separation agreements, even if it's vague.

While I understand the worry, especially with eight years under your belt, it's really hard to predict specific severance packages without official word. Companies often base these on a lot of factors, including the business climate at the *exact* moment of any potential workforce reduction. 'Fair' can also be subjective and change. Your best bet is to keep an ear to the ground through official channels and perhaps start discreetly updating your resume and networking, just to have options ready. Don't let the rumors paralyze you, but definitely be proactive.
