What's the vibe on internal transfers right now?

Been in my current role in Operations for about 3 years now. Really liking the team, but the upward mobility feels pretty stagnant. I've seen a couple of roles pop up in Risk Management that look interesting, but honestly, with all the whispers and general unease around the bank, I'm hesitant to even put myself out there. Is anyone else looking to move internally? Are hiring managers even looking at internal candidates seriously, or is it all about bringing in outside talent these days? Feels like a risky move to signal I might be looking to leave my current team if things get dicey.

Yeah, I've definitely felt that stagnation too. It's a tough spot when you like your team but see limited growth. I haven't personally applied for an internal role recently, but I've heard from a few people that it can be a bit of a lottery. Some managers seem genuinely open to internal folks, while others seem to have their eyes set on external hires, maybe to bring in fresh perspectives or specific skill sets they think are missing. It's worth keeping an eye on those Risk Management roles though – if they genuinely interest you, the worst that can happen is you don't get an interview. Might be worth testing the waters.

Honestly, the 'whispers and unease' are probably just part of the usual corporate hum. Every big bank has them. From what I've seen, internal transfers are still absolutely a thing, but it depends heavily on the department and the specific role. If the Risk Management roles are genuinely in demand and they're struggling to fill them externally, they'll absolutely look internally. Don't let the general 'vibe' discourage you. Focus on tailoring your resume and cover letter for those specific roles, highlight your transferable skills from Ops, and show them why you'd be a good fit. It's about making a strong case for yourself, regardless of external noise.
