Quiet rooms and calendar invites: Are we next?

Is anyone else getting a weird vibe in the Sunnyvale office this week? I’ve noticed a massive uptick in back-to-back calendar invites between leadership and HR, and my manager has been acting incredibly cagey during our 1:1s. Usually, we’re all about the quarterly roadmaps, but suddenly the talk is all about 'streamlining core operations' and 'synergy' with the HPE acquisition news lingering in the back of everyone's minds. I’ve seen three different people get walked out this month alone, though management is framing it as 'performance management.' The silence from the executive team is the most frustrating part. We’re all just staring at our slack status waiting for that dreaded 'all-hands' meeting request to pop up. Has anyone heard anything concrete from the grapevine, or are we all just collectively holding our breath until the next fiscal review?

Honestly, keep your head down and start updating your resume yesterday. I’ve seen this playbook a dozen times during big M&A integrations. Once the buzzwords like 'synergy' and 'streamlining' start flying around in every leadership meeting, the writing is usually on the wall. The walkouts you’re seeing are just the beginning of a larger headcount reduction plan. Don't wait for a calendar invite titled 'Business Update' to realize what's happening; protect yourself and start networking outside the company while you still have access to your internal resources.

I wouldn't jump to conclusions just yet. Every time a major acquisition like HPE happens, there’s naturally going to be a ton of cross-departmental alignment and structural reviews. It’s stressful, sure, but it doesn't automatically mean mass layoffs are imminent. Leadership is likely just trying to figure out how to merge workflows and satisfy the new corporate oversight. Stay focused on your deliverables and try not to spiral over office gossip. Anxiety is contagious in these open-plan offices, but sometimes a closed-door meeting is just a boring operational update, not a pink slip.
