Is the RTO mandate a precursor to RIFs?

We were told we have to be in the office three days a week starting next month, no exceptions. Funny how they emphasize 'collaboration' while our productivity metrics have been at record highs remote. I’ve been around long enough to know that when they start pushing the hard-line RTO mandates, it’s usually because they want to see who will quit voluntarily before they start handing out the severance packets. It’s an easy way to trim the headcount without triggering WARN act notices or paying out full packages. My direct reports are already polishing their resumes, and honestly, I don't blame them. If you’re not looking at your options right now, you’re being naive. The culture has shifted from 'we’re all in this together' to 'we need to cut fat to keep the shareholders happy' almost overnight. Expecting an announcement by early October.
