Is the bench looking unusually crowded?

Working in one of the construction project offices and I'm genuinely concerned about the number of colleagues currently on the bench. Usually, there's a quick churn, but people are sitting around for weeks now without being mapped to new project sites. It’s becoming an open secret that the leadership is reviewing 'non-billable' resources very strictly this quarter. I know L&T is a giant and usually pretty stable, but the internal vibes are definitely shifting. Everything is being scrutinized—travel expenses, site allowances, even minor procurement costs are getting flagged by head office. It feels like they are clearing the deck. If you're on the bench right now, have you been getting any updates from HR or your vertical heads? I'm worried that 're-deployment' is just a polite word for 'we'll be letting you go in Q3'. Would appreciate any insights from folks in the larger projects or the HQ teams. Is this just a cyclical lull, or should we be bracing for a rough patch?

I’ve noticed the same thing at my site. It feels like the usual rapid deployment cycle has hit a wall recently. The leadership is definitely tightening the purse strings, and there is a lot of nervous energy in the breakroom about who gets picked for the next phase. Honestly, if you’re currently unmapped, now is the time to start networking internally or looking elsewhere before the axe actually falls. The culture feels a lot more corporate and cold lately compared to a few years back.

L&T has always been a beast when it comes to stability, but even giants have to answer to the balance sheet. I wouldn't panic just yet—these cycles happen every few years when project pipelines get delayed or portfolios are restructured. That said, the scrutiny on billability is definitely real right now. Just focus on making yourself essential to the project managers you do know and keep your head down. It’s an uncomfortable stretch, but it’s rarely as dire as the office rumors make it out to be.
