Any changes to the travel policy or external contractor spend?

I noticed in my group that we’ve suddenly stopped all non-essential travel and the budget for outside contractors has been frozen mid-project. Usually, this is the first canary in the coal mine before they start looking at headcount. I’ve been trying to gauge if this is just a temporary budget tightening due to the quarter end or if we’re looking at something more systemic. It’s hard to get a straight answer when leadership is being so opaque. If anyone has seen similar cost-cutting measures in their specific business units, please chime in. Trying to figure out if I need to update my resume sooner rather than later.

Same thing is happening in my department. We were told all contractor extensions are on hold indefinitely and any travel requires executive approval, which is basically a polite way of saying no. It definitely feels like they are tightening the purse strings to protect the margin before the next earnings call. It is frustrating that management won't be transparent, but these patterns usually precede a round of restructuring or at least a strict hiring freeze. Keep your head down and start updating your resume just in case.

I wouldn't panic just yet. Every year around this time, leadership starts cracking down on discretionary spend to hit year-end targets. It’s standard procedure to freeze contractors and pull back on travel to balance the books. While it feels ominous, it’s often just accounting theater rather than a sign of imminent layoffs. Just stick to your core tasks and keep track of your project contributions. If they really were planning major cuts, they usually keep the travel open to maintain appearances until the very last second.
