Anyone else hearing about a Q4 hiring freeze?

I’ve been seeing a lot of chatter lately on Slack about team headcounts being locked down until January. My manager keeps dodging questions about backfilling two open roles on our team, and we just got word that our travel budget for the rest of the year is essentially non-existent. It feels like the company is trying to squeeze every bit of margin out of the remainder of the year. Has anyone heard if this is just standard end-of-year austerity or are we bracing for something bigger in early 2025? It’s getting pretty quiet in the leadership meetings, and the lack of transparency is making everyone in my department nervous. Just trying to figure out if I should be keeping my LinkedIn status updated.

It’s definitely not just you. I’ve noticed the same pattern across a few different departments, and the radio silence from leadership is what’s making everyone nervous. When they start cutting travel and holding back on backfills, it’s rarely just about 'budget optimization.' It’s pretty clear they’re trying to polish the books for year-end reporting, but it leaves the rest of us carrying double the workload with zero support. Keep your ear to the ground because if they’re clamping down this hard in Q4, Q1 is likely going to bring some form of restructuring.
