The travel freeze is a classic indicator that the spreadsheets aren't looking the way they need to for the next earnings call. When they cut T&E, they are trying to pad the margins before making a bigger move. I’ve been through this cycle before at other companies, and the 'operational efficiency' talk is almost always a precursor to headcount reductions. If your director is acting weird, they probably already have a list of names or know exactly which departments are on the chopping block. Keep your resume updated.
Honestly, the travel ban is just the tip of the iceberg. Everyone is acting like the sky is falling, but leadership has been leaning on these efficiency buzzwords for months to distract us from stagnant growth. It is frustrating that they refuse to be transparent about what this means for our teams. At this point, I’m just waiting for the other shoe to drop so we can stop pretending everything is fine. The lack of clear communication is doing way more damage to morale than a few cancelled trips ever could.
