Is the performance review cycle being accelerated?

I’m seeing a lot of chatter about the upcoming performance review cycle being pushed forward by a few weeks compared to the usual calendar. In my department, the focus has shifted entirely to 'stack ranking' projects. It feels like they are looking for reasons to justify thinning the herd without calling it a RIF. My team lead is acting extremely cagey whenever someone asks about the hiring freeze or the status of open roles. We’ve had a few positions that were supposed to be backfilled months ago just vanish from the portal entirely. If you’re currently working on projects that seem redundant or aren’t directly driving top-line revenue, I’d suggest backing up your files and updating your portfolio just in case. The energy in the office is definitely off, and the silence from HR is deafening.

The shift toward stack ranking is definitely a red flag. It is the classic corporate playbook to force distributions so managers can tag 'underperformers' before a mass reduction. If your lead is being cagey, they probably already have a target list in their desk drawer. Keep your head down, document everything you have delivered in the last two quarters, and start quietly updating your resume. When they move the goalposts this close to a potential layoff, you have to prioritize your own security over company loyalty.

I have been hearing the exact same whispers across a few different departments. The acceleration of the cycle isn't a coincidence; it is clearly a coordinated move to trim the headcount before the end of the fiscal year. They are squeezing every bit of productivity out of us while simultaneously freezing backfills to keep the budget tight. Don't fall for the 'performance focus' narrative—this is just a way to prune the payroll while maintaining plausible deniability. Take a look at your options elsewhere before things get truly chaotic.
