Suddenly very quiet in the corporate offices

Anyone else notice how the budget approvals have basically hit a brick wall? I submitted a standard request for a project I’ve been running for months, and it’s been sitting in 'pending' status for two weeks. My manager usually signs off within 24 hours. When I poked them about it, they just told me to 'hold off on any non-essential spending' until further notice. This smells like the start of a budget tightening exercise. I’ve been through a few cycles like this at other companies and it usually precedes a round of layoffs. Everyone is walking on eggshells and avoiding eye contact during standups. I’m trying to keep my head down and just do the work, but it’s hard not to stress when you hear nothing but crickets from upper management about the actual fiscal health of the company. Has anyone heard anything concrete from HR or their VPs, or are we all just guessing at this point?

That sounds like the classic pre-layoff freeze. I’ve seen this exact pattern at Live Nation before, where everything goes dark right before the axe falls. They stop all spending to juice the quarterly numbers, and suddenly nobody has any answers. If your manager is being vague, it’s usually because they’ve already been told to start preparing lists. Start polishing your resume tonight; it’s better to be ahead of the curve than blindsided when the next round of 'restructuring' hits the internal comms channel.

I wouldn't jump to conclusions just yet. It’s common for the company to lock down budgets when the fiscal year wraps up or when they’re auditing overhead for a big acquisition. Sometimes the red tape is just bureaucratic inefficiency rather than a sign of impending doom. Have you tried digging into the internal dashboard to see if other departments are dealing with the same lag? It could just be a temporary system hiccup or a shift in priorities rather than a signal for mass layoffs. Take a breath.
