Is the Q3 re-org actually a stealth cut?

Anyone else noticing the weird shift in internal messaging lately? We went from 'growth' to 'strategic alignment' practically overnight. My director canceled our 1:1s for the next three weeks and the calendar invites for the department syncs are just disappearing from my Outlook one by one. There’s a distinct vibe that we’re being prepped for something, but nobody in middle management will look us in the eye when we ask about headcount. I’ve been here long enough to know that when the 'operational efficiency' memos start flooding the inbox with vague buzzwords, the axe isn't far behind. My team is currently under a total hiring freeze, and they aren't even backfilling the roles of people who quit voluntarily last month. That usually signals the math is already done and the numbers are being crunched to hit a specific percentage reduction. Has anyone heard whispers from HR or seen any weird activity in the internal directory? It feels like we’re just waiting for the other shoe to drop at this point.

I've seen this movie before at Lumen. The shift from 'growth' to 'strategic alignment' is corporate-speak for 'prepare your resume.' When the calendar invites start vanishing and management avoids eye contact, the writing is already on the wall. They aren't going to tell you anything until HR sends out the calendar invite for a 'mandatory meeting' that lasts exactly five minutes. Start saving your work samples and cleaning up your LinkedIn now, because the stealth cut is likely already in motion.

Honestly, the silence from leadership is the biggest red flag. If it were truly just a reorganization, they would be over-communicating to keep morale from cratering. The fact that your director is ghosting 1:1s suggests they have been instructed to keep their mouths shut while the severance packages are finalized. Don't waste energy waiting for a straight answer. Use this time to network quietly and get your exit strategy ready before the axe actually falls.
