Job security vs. company direction - am I overthinking this?

Been here about 4 years, mostly on the software development side, focusing on internal tools and platforms. Lately, it feels like we're constantly pivoting. New strategic initiatives are announced, and then a few months later, they're de-emphasized or outright shelved. It's making it really hard to feel secure in my role or to feel like the work I'm doing has long-term value for the company. My manager is doing their best to keep morale up, but even they seem a bit lost. Is anyone else in a similar boat? Wondering if this constant churn is just standard for the industry now, or if it's a sign that maybe Lumen is struggling more than we're letting on. Trying to decide if I should start passively looking or if I'm just being a bit paranoid.

Sounds like a classic case of corporate whiplash. It's tough when the roadmap keeps changing, makes you wonder if you're building a house on quicksand. My advice? Focus on skills that are transferable, not just tied to Lumen's current flavor of the month. Can you take the tech stack you're using and find similar roles elsewhere? Sometimes you have to future-proof your own career even if the company isn't doing it for you. Hang in there, but start quietly updating that resume.

I hear you. It's demoralizing when the goalposts keep moving. I've seen that kind of churn before, and it usually signals deeper issues, not just a temporary funk. Maybe the company is reacting to market pressures, or maybe the leadership is just… indecisive. Don't beat yourself up for feeling insecure. Your work *should* feel valuable. If it doesn't, that's a legitimate concern. Have you considered talking to folks in other departments to get a broader perspective on the company's trajectory?
