I feel you. It's incredibly demoralizing. My team is short-staffed already, and the workload is insane. Seeing new roles pop up for other departments feels like a slap in the face. Makes you wonder if they're just shuffling things around, re-badging positions, and calling it 'growth' to appease investors while the actual workers burn out. Start documenting everything you do; CYA is the name of the game these days.
Could it be skills gap? Maybe they're trying to bring in people with expertise in areas the company is pivoting toward. I've seen this happen before – old roles get phased out, new ones emerge. It doesn't make the uncertainty any easier, but might explain why hiring continues despite the whispers of layoffs. Might be worth checking those new job descriptions to see what's changing.
