Is the travel ban a sign of what's coming?

Has anyone else noticed the sudden clampdown on T&E and conference travel? I know leadership is pushing the 'operational efficiency' narrative, but it feels a lot heavier this time around. I’ve been through enough cycles here to know that when the travel budget gets axed mid-quarter without a clear roadmap, the RIF isn't far behind. My manager won't look me in the eye during 1:1s and is suddenly obsessed with documenting every single task on my plate. It feels like they're building the justification file before the final axe drops. Anyone else getting the same vibe in their org, or am I just being paranoid because of the current market climate?

The writing is on the wall. I’ve seen this exact playbook at Lumentum before every major reduction in force over the last few years. The T&E freeze is rarely just about cutting costs; it’s about cash preservation to balance the books before the quarterly announcement. If your manager is acting twitchy and suddenly hyper-focused on task documentation, they are likely being instructed to create a paper trail for performance-based departures. Start updating your resume tonight and don’t wait for the official email to start networking outside the company.

I wouldn't jump to conclusions just yet. Every time the macro environment gets a little bumpy, leadership gets skittish about overhead expenses. Tightening travel budgets is a standard reflex to protect margins, especially with how volatile the sector has been lately. While it is always smart to stay prepared, don't let the rumor mill spiral out of control. Sometimes a restrictive travel policy is just a blunt tool to satisfy analysts during an earnings call rather than a precursor to deep cuts. Keep your head down and focus on your core deliverables for now.
