Is the mid-year review cycle looking unusually thin?

Just finished my mid-year sync and the vibe was extremely weird. My manager usually gives pretty transparent feedback, but this time it was all about 'managing expectations' and 'focusing on core operations only.' Zero talk about the usual performance incentives or project growth. It honestly felt like they were told not to promise anything long-term. I checked the internal portal and a few roles that were supposed to be backfilled have just vanished into thin air. Has anyone else had a review where they weren't even asked about goals for Q4? I’m getting a really bad gut feeling that they’re clearing the runway for something big and unpleasant. Trying to stay optimistic, but the math isn't adding up.

I noticed the same shift in tone during my check-in last week. The focus was entirely on keeping heads down and minimizing operational overhead. When I asked about the project roadmap for Q4, I was basically told to ignore anything not directly tied to current output. It feels like they are clearing the decks for something, though nobody will admit it. The disappearance of those backfilled roles is the biggest red flag I’ve seen all year. Keep your resume polished and stay ready for whatever comes next.

Everything feels locked down tighter than usual. My manager was being incredibly cagey, sticking to a script that clearly came from higher up. They avoided every question about career progression or performance metrics, which is a major departure from how things were handled this time last year. It’s pretty obvious they’re being told to keep compensation discussions off the table until further notice. Whatever the official line is, it’s clear the priority is cutting costs and stalling on any new commitments. Definitely proceed with caution.
