Stagnant bonus pools and quiet exits

Is it just my department, or is the mood lately incredibly weird? We’ve had three senior folks leave in the last month alone, and nobody is backfilling the roles. When people ask, HR just gives that vague 'strategic realignment' answer. It feels like they are doing a slow-motion layoff by attrition—just letting people walk out the door and not posting the reqs to save on overhead. I checked my bonus tier this year and it’s essentially flat despite the production numbers looking solid. Are we being prepared for a transition, or is this just standard tightening before the next earnings call? The lack of transparency is honestly more draining than an actual announcement at this point. If anyone has seen a memo or caught wind of a target date for a town hall, please share. Hard to stay focused when you’re constantly looking over your shoulder.

It is definitely not just your department. The 'strategic realignment' line is the classic corporate smoke screen for headcount reduction without the PR hit of a formal layoff. Most of us are seeing the exact same pattern: senior roles disappearing, workloads being dumped on whoever is left, and bonuses that don't reflect the current energy market performance. Everyone is keeping their head down and polishing their resumes because the lack of transparency is a massive red flag. Expect more quiet exits before the next quarter hits.

I've been hearing whispers about this across multiple offices. The decision to leave those positions vacant isn't an accident; it’s a calculated move to pad the bottom line while pretending the company is simply tightening its belt. It’s frustrating to see production targets hit while the rewards stay frozen in place. If they aren't backfilling, they are likely preparing for a much harder pivot or a potential acquisition. Keep your options open and start networking outside the company now—it’s much easier to find a new seat while you’ve still got one.
