Anyone else seeing the backfill freeze?

Is it just my department, or is MMC quietly hitting the brakes on all open headcount? I’ve been hearing rumblings that the budget for this quarter got clawed back suddenly. My manager is acting incredibly cagey during our 1:1s whenever the topic of team growth comes up. We lost a couple of people to natural attrition last month and were told they wouldn't be replaced, but now I’m hearing from colleagues in other segments that entire project budgets are being audited for 'efficiency.' It feels like we are doing more with less while leadership keeps talking about 'synergies' and 'streamlining.' I don't want to panic, but the vibes are definitely off. Does anyone know if there’s a firm-wide directive coming down, or is this just local management tightening the belt to look good for the next quarterly report? Just trying to gauge if I should polish up the resume now or wait until the next town hall.

It is definitely happening across the board. I am in a completely different segment and we were told the same thing last week—no backfills for the foreseeable future. Management is being incredibly tight-lipped, but the 'efficiency audit' talk is basically code for a hiring freeze until the end of the fiscal year. They are squeezing every department to meet margin targets, so don't expect those vacancies to open back up anytime soon. It is frustrating, but par for the course here lately.

Honestly, I stopped listening to the corporate-speak about 'strategic realignment' months ago. When they start freezing backfills, it is almost always the precursor to bigger cuts. My advice? Don't bank on those roles being opened again, and definitely don't kill yourself trying to cover the extra workload. If they want to freeze growth, that is their business, but do not let them burn you out in the process. Keep your resume polished and watch how things unfold over the next few months.
