Anyone else noticing the hiring freeze creeping into BU levels?

Is it just my department or is everyone seeing the same thing? We’ve had two open roles that were supposed to be backfills sitting in 'pending approval' purgatory for six weeks now. Every time I ask HR, I get the standard 'optimizing our resource allocation' line. It’s starting to feel like a soft freeze across the board. I’ve been through enough cycles here to know that when the headcount management gets this tight, the budget ax isn't far behind. My director is being extra weird about travel expenses and discretionary spending lately, too. Is there any chatter in your business units about tightening the belt? Thinking about dusting off the resume just in case, but curious if I’m just being paranoid or if the writing is on the wall.

Same situation here. We had a senior project manager role pulled at the eleventh hour, and the ambiguity from leadership is getting impossible to ignore. They keep using corporate speak about 'strategic alignment,' but we all know what that means. If you've been around long enough, you recognize the pattern of blocking backfills right before they announce a broader restructuring. Keep your resume polished and stay quiet until the smoke clears, because things rarely get better once they stop replacing people.

Honestly, I wouldn't panic just yet. Every year around this time, the finance team pulls these levers to make the balance sheet look tighter for the upcoming quarter review. It usually happens when they’re trying to hit specific margin targets before the fiscal close. It’s annoying, sure, and the 'pending approval' limbo is a classic stall tactic, but it doesn't always signal immediate layoffs. Just keep your head down, do your job, and wait for the quarterly town hall. Usually, the 'freeze' thaws once the new budget cycle kicks in.
