Is the Q3 reforecast actually a precursor to RIFs?

Anyone else sitting through these 'operational efficiency' meetings lately? The tone has shifted pretty aggressively over the last two weeks. It feels like every time we bring up a project resource need, the response is a vague comment about 'aligning with our long-term structural targets.' I’ve been at Masco for a few years and usually, when the language pivots this hard from 'growth initiatives' to 'strict cost discipline' without an actual project roadmap, it means the headcount spreadsheet is being reviewed by Finance. We haven't heard a peep about specific layoffs, but the internal atmosphere is incredibly tense. Senior leadership is staying quiet, but the middle management layers look exhausted and are noticeably avoiding direct questions about Q4 outlook. Is anyone seeing actual project cancellations in your business units, or is this just the standard end-of-year tightening? I’m starting to get that uneasy feeling that the shoe is going to drop right before the holidays.

I’ve been seeing the exact same pattern in our department meetings. Whenever leadership starts using 'structural alignment' as a catch-all phrase, it’s rarely a good sign for the current team. I remember the last time they shifted the messaging like this; it took about a month before the RIFs started rolling out. Keep your resume polished and start documenting your contributions now, because the lack of clarity on project roadmaps usually implies they aren't planning for those projects to actually be staffed by the current headcount in the coming months.

Honestly, I wouldn't panic just yet, but definitely stay cautious. 'Operational efficiency' is corporate speak for budget cutting, but it doesn't always lead to immediate layoffs—sometimes it's just a freeze on hiring and a reduction in contractor spend. However, given how aggressive the tone has become lately, it’s smart to prepare for the worst. If they can’t give you a straight answer about resource allocation for Q4, that’s your biggest red flag. Prioritize yourself and keep an eye on how the upcoming earnings call frames the next fiscal year.
