Feeling the pressure: Performance reviews or a setup?

Just finished my mid-year review and the goalposts have moved, again. It feels like they are intentionally making the KPIs impossible to hit so they have a paper trail if they decide to pull the plug on the headcount later this year. I've always been a high performer here, but suddenly everything I’ve done for the past six months is being questioned. I’m hearing through the grapevine that corporate is looking at 'right-sizing' specifically in marketing and logistics. Whether that’s just paranoid water-cooler talk or something more substantial, I don’t know, but the level of micromanagement is through the roof. It’s hard to stay focused on hitting targets when you’re constantly wondering if your current project is going to be the next one on the chopping block. Is anyone else feeling like they’re being managed out, or am I just reading too much into the current macro environment? I’m already dusting off my resume just in case, but I’d love to know if others are seeing a similar shift in how management is handling internal feedback.

The goalpost shifting is a classic tactic they use when they want to clean house without admitting it’s a layoff. I’ve seen this exact cycle at McCormick before—they start nitpicking documentation right before a restructuring announcement hits. If you're seeing those whispers about marketing and logistics, trust your gut. Document every single task you complete and start quietly polishing your resume tonight. Don't fall into the trap of working yourself into the ground to hit an impossible metric; they've already made their mind up if they're looking for a paper trail.

Honestly, keep your head down and ride it out if you can, but definitely don't take it personally. Corporate is definitely tightening the belt, and these 'performance reviews' are just the tools they use to justify internal changes to shareholders. It’s brutal, but it’s been the standard operating procedure for a while now. If your numbers are suddenly being questioned despite a history of success, it’s clearly not about your actual output—it’s about the bottom line. Stay professional, but stop burning yourself out for a company that is clearly looking for the exit.
