Anyone getting the 'do more with less' email series?

It feels like every week there’s a new email from leadership about 'operational excellence' and 'streamlining our focus.' We had a department meeting yesterday where they explicitly mentioned that we need to hit the same output with a smaller budget for contractors. It just feels like they are priming us for a downsizing event. The vibe in the office is honestly miserable. Everyone is constantly looking over their shoulder during syncs. My team lead keeps dodging questions about the FY25 roadmap, which is never a good sign. If they were planning a growth cycle, they’d be shouting it from the rooftops. Instead, it’s all quiet and heavy on the 'we need to be resilient' messaging. Just wondering if other departments are getting the same energy or if my group is just on the chopping block.

The 'do more with less' emails are just corporate speak for impending layoffs. I've been through this cycle at Medtronic before, and every time the rhetoric shifts toward 'operational excellence,' the reduction notices follow shortly after. Your team lead is likely dodging questions because they don't have the answers yet or have been told to keep quiet until HR signs off on the cuts. Honestly, if you have an updated resume, it might be time to start discreetly testing the job market before the next wave hits.

It is honestly exhausting to keep reading these emails while the actual workload keeps piling up. They talk about streamlining and focus, but all we are really doing is picking up the slack for open roles that they refuse to backfill. I stopped paying attention to the 'roadmap' updates because they change every quarter anyway. Just try to keep your head down and do what you can, but don't kill yourself for a company that is clearly prioritizing the balance sheet over the actual people doing the work.
