Impact of the October WARN notice in CA

Just saw the WARN notice for the 237 layoffs hitting in early December. It’s brutal timing to be cutting people right before the holidays. Does anyone know if this is strictly tied to a specific legacy line or if they’re cleaning house across the board in the California offices? My manager is being extremely tight-lipped, but the 'synergy' talk in the last all-hands is starting to make sense now. For those affected, are they offering the standard severance package or is it getting clawed back? Trying to figure out if I should start polishing the resume now or wait until after the new year.

I've been through a few of these rounds at Medtronic over the years, and honestly, the 'synergy' buzzword is usually just corporate speak for cost-cutting across multiple divisions. It’s rarely ever limited to one legacy line. In my experience, they try to keep the severance packages standard to avoid legal headaches, but the atmosphere gets pretty toxic once the WARN notices hit. Don't expect your manager to give you a straight answer because they’re likely just as in the dark or under orders to keep quiet until the final list is finalized. Start updating your resume now and look for a referral elsewhere.

It is honestly disgusting to see this go down right before the holidays. I have friends at the California site who are completely paralyzed waiting to see if their desks will be cleared by December. The way leadership handles these announcements is always so clinical, completely ignoring the human toll. If you are on the list, don’t sign anything immediately. Make sure you read the severance agreement carefully and push back if the terms feel off. They rely on people being desperate or scared to sign away their rights, so protect yourself first.
