Anyone else seeing the hiring freeze tightening?

I’ve been trying to move laterally into a different department for months, and every single lead I’ve talked to mentions that the budget for new headcount is completely locked down until at least Q3. It’s not just my division, either—I’ve got friends in logistics and regional ops saying the same thing. Usually, when they stop backfilling roles that open up, it’s a precursor to something bigger. I’m hearing whispers that leadership is putting a heavy emphasis on 'operational efficiency' and 'streamlining' in the latest briefings. We all know what those buzzwords usually mean in retail. Has anyone heard anything concrete about restructuring, or are we all just waiting for the other shoe to drop? The lack of transparency is becoming pretty draining at this point.

I’ve been seeing the exact same thing at my store. Management keeps using the phrase 'operational efficiency' like it’s a magic spell, but all it really means is that we’re doing the work of two people for the same pay. My department is currently down three bodies, and they’ve made it clear that no one is getting hired until the new fiscal year starts. It’s exhausting watching the shelves sit empty while corporate claims they’re just 'optimizing' labor costs. At this point, I’m just waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Honestly, the writing is on the wall. When they freeze internal transfers and stop backfilling, they aren't just cutting costs—they’re preparing for a massive restructuring. I’ve survived a few of these cycles before, and it always starts with these vague whispers from regional about being more 'lean.' If you’re looking to move departments, don't count on anything happening before Q3 or even Q4. It’s probably time to start updating your resume and looking at what other retailers are doing, because things at Meijer aren't going to get easier anytime soon.
