Anyone else feeling like the 'Merck culture' is shifting?

Been with Merck for a solid chunk of my career, and I remember a time when innovation and employee growth were really championed. Lately, though, it feels like there's a lot more emphasis on cost-cutting and 'efficiency,' which I get is part of business, but it’s starting to feel like it’s impacting the core culture. People seem more guarded, less willing to take risks or speak up. There's also been a noticeable increase in contract roles and a decrease in full-time hiring for certain areas. It’s created a bit of a two-tiered system and a general sense of instability, even if there haven't been mass layoffs announced. Is this just my perception, or are others experiencing this subtle but significant change in the day-to-day work environment? Just feels like a departure from what made Merck a desirable place to work for so long.

I've noticed a similar trend. It feels like the drive for short-term financial targets might be overshadowing the long-term vision that used to define the company. The focus on efficiency is understandable, but it does seem to be creating an environment where employees feel less empowered to be creative or to push boundaries. The shift in hiring practices also raises questions about stability and career progression for those of us who have dedicated years to the organization.

Interesting perspective. I've been here a few years, and while I haven't experienced the 'glory days' you describe, I do sense a tightening. Budgets feel tighter, and there's a lot of talk about streamlining. I wonder if this is a company-wide strategic shift or a reaction to current market pressures. Either way, it’s definitely something many of us are observing and discussing informally.
