Hiring slowdown is undeniable - what's the strategy?

I've been tracking open positions across several departments relevant to my field, and the drop-off in new postings over the last quarter has been significant. It's not just a few roles here and there; it feels like a much broader slowdown. Several roles I was keeping an eye on have been 'under review' or quietly closed. At the same time, there's a lot of internal talk about 'optimizing our talent footprint' and 'driving productivity.' It's making me nervous, especially when I see new hires in some areas being put through an incredibly rigorous vetting process, almost as if they're trying to avoid bringing anyone new in if they can possibly help it. Anyone have any insights into what's driving this hiring pause? Is it a response to market conditions, or is there something more specific happening at Merck?

It's concerning to see the hiring freeze across so many departments. The internal messaging about 'optimization' definitely sounds like code for something more significant than just a temporary pause. I've noticed the same trend in job postings and experienced a few roles I was interested in go dark. Hoping for some clarity soon as it's creating a lot of anxiety.

I'm seeing the same pattern. The 'under review' status on many roles is a red flag. While efficiency is important, a hiring slowdown of this magnitude usually points to bigger strategic shifts. It's understandable that people are feeling nervous about job security and career progression when opportunities seem to be drying up so rapidly.
