Is anyone actually safe right now?

Every week it's a new location, a new team, a new 'strategic realignment.' I’ve been with Merck for over six years, and I’ve never felt this level of instability. We keep hearing the 'innovation' and 'streamlining' buzzwords from leadership, but it feels like the pipeline is just being gutted to make the margins look prettier for the next earnings call. It’s impossible to focus on actual R&D when you’re constantly checking the internal newsletters to see if your site is next on the chopping block. Is there anyone left in the building who hasn't been touched by this? I’m exhausted by the constant fear-mongering and the lack of transparency from management. Seriously considering polishing the resume this weekend because I’m tired of waiting for the ax to fall.

I’m right there with you. It feels like the company culture has shifted entirely toward short-term optics rather than long-term scientific progress. Every 'transformation' initiative just feels like a fancy way to mask a headcount reduction. The lack of transparency from the top is deafening, and watching talented colleagues cycle through the exit door every few months is demoralizing. At this point, the only thing being manufactured with consistency is anxiety.

Hang in there. I’ve seen this cycle repeat a few times over the last decade, and while the atmosphere is toxic, the underlying pipeline is stronger than the current leadership narrative suggests. Don't let the corporate speak get to you—focus on your own professional network and keep your documentation tight. It’s a massive machine, and sometimes the best way to survive the turbulence is to keep your head down, do your work, and refuse to let their bottom-line obsession dictate your personal value.
