Performance reviews feeling a bit more… pointed lately?

Hey everyone, been at Merck for a few years now and things feel different this cycle. My manager's been asking a lot more specific questions about project impact and efficiency, almost like they're building a case for something. It’s not just the usual performance talk, it feels like they're looking for justifications for *why* we're here. Anyone else getting this vibe? Lots of talk about 'optimizing resources' and 'strategic alignment' in town halls, which usually translates to headcount. Trying not to spiral, but the air feels a bit heavy. Hope it's just the usual end-of-year jitters, but the tone feels…different. Just looking to see if anyone else is picking up on this shift.

Yeah, I've noticed a similar shift. It feels like there's more pressure to quantify every single contribution. They're really drilling down into metrics and ROI, which can be exhausting when you're just trying to do good science. The buzzwords are definitely increasing, and it creates a low-level anxiety. Just hoping it leads to actual strategic investment rather than just cuts.

I hear you. It's like the goalposts have moved, and the emphasis is less on innovation and more on immediate, measurable outcomes. I've been trying to document everything meticulously, but it's a lot of extra work on top of the actual job. The town halls often feel like they're preparing us for tough news, even if they don't explicitly say it.
