Just saw the official WARN notice for Detroit. 1,561 people. That is a massive chunk of the workforce. I’ve been hearing rumors for weeks that the numbers were going to be high, but seeing the actual count in writing makes it feel so much more real. My heart goes out to everyone affected—this industry has been an absolute meat grinder lately. If you’re one of the 1,500, please make sure you’re checking your severance packets closely and checking in on your unemployment status immediately. The HR communication has been radio silence for most of us on the ground. Has anyone heard if this is just the first wave, or is this the total count for the Detroit market? I'm trying to figure out if I should be packing my desk or if the dust has settled for now.

That is absolutely brutal. I know the industry has been volatile, but losing that many people in one go is devastating for the local community. It really makes you wonder if they are trying to lean out the operations ahead of something else or if the financials were just that dire. To everyone caught in the middle of this, I hope you have a strong safety net and can find something stable soon. This whole situation feels like it is spiraling out of control for the rank and file workers.

Honestly, I’m not surprised. MGM has been tightening the belt across almost every property lately, pushing for higher margins at the expense of staffing levels. It’s the classic corporate playbook: cut the headcount to boost the stock price for the next earnings call while everyone else deals with the fallout. It is cold, calculated, and incredibly frustrating to watch from the sidelines. Keep your heads up and make sure you squeeze every penny out of that severance package before walking away.
