Xbox 'reset' - what's the real reason?

Reading all this news about the Xbox division 'reset' and the 4,800 layoffs is pretty wild. It feels like a major strategic shift, but I'm struggling to connect the dots completely. Is this solely about cost-cutting, or is there a bigger picture involving strategy, competition, or even potential divestitures down the line? The gaming industry is brutal, and while Microsoft is huge, even they seem to be feeling the pressure. Wondering what the long-term implications are for the gaming sector and for Microsoft's overall presence in it. Seems like more than just a quarterly earnings adjustment.

It's definitely more than just cost-cutting. The industry is shifting rapidly, with subscription models and cloud gaming becoming dominant. Microsoft might be consolidating resources to focus on Game Pass and their cloud infrastructure, potentially at the expense of traditional hardware cycles. This could also free up capital to acquire studios or intellectual property that better fit their future vision, rather than spreading themselves too thin across multiple platforms and approaches. The gaming landscape is evolving, and they're clearly trying to steer the ship in a new direction.
