Anyone else seeing the backfill freeze tighten?

It’s getting weird on my team. We lost two senior engineers over the last month, and leadership is suddenly acting like those seats don’t exist. Usually, HR is all over the backfill process, but now we’re being told to ‘absorb the scope’ and that headcount is being ‘re-evaluated.’ Does anyone actually believe that means we’re growing? The vibe in the last All-Hands felt incredibly scripted, especially when they dodged the question about Q4 projections. It feels like they’re trying to squeeze us for everything we’ve got before making a move. Has anyone on the sales or product side heard anything concrete about budget cuts, or are they just keeping the status quo for as long as possible? I’m starting to update my resume just in case, but I’m curious if anyone else is getting the same ‘hunker down’ memo from their managers.

That sounds like the classic pre-layoff signal. When leadership stops backfilling core roles and talks about 'absorbing scope,' they are usually just prepping the books to look lean for investors or setting up a reduction in force. Honestly, if you're already feeling the squeeze, polish up your resume now. Don't wait for them to decide your role is 're-evaluated' too. It’s a sinking ship mentality, and it’s better to jump before the actual announcement happens.

We’ve seen the exact same pattern at my shop. The 're-evaluation' talk is just corporate speak for a silent freeze. It’s infuriating when they dodge simple headcount questions in All-Hands meetings, especially when the remaining engineers are drowning in technical debt. If they aren't willing to replace lost talent, it shows they’ve completely pivoted away from long-term stability. Start looking elsewhere; you shouldn't have to sacrifice your work-life balance just because the brass can't manage a budget properly.
