Rant: Stop overhiring then acting surprised when things slow down!

I'm so sick of this boom-and-bust cycle. MongoDB went on a massive hiring spree last year, bringing in tons of new grads and mid-level engineers. Now, suddenly, projects are getting canceled, and people are worried about layoffs. Where's the foresight? Why not hire at a sustainable pace instead of creating this artificial bubble and then popping it? It's incredibly stressful for everyone involved, and it feels like management is just playing with people's lives. They preach about work-life balance and 'employee well-being,' but this constant uncertainty does the opposite. It's infuriating.

I hear you. It's rampant in tech. Companies get VC funding, headcount becomes a vanity metric, and then reality bites. MongoDB isn't unique, but that doesn't make it right. It's frustrating because a steady growth model is almost always better in the long run. More sustainable projects, happier employees, less wasted resources on onboarding and then… offboarding. Hopefully, they learn from this, but honestly, I doubt it.

While I sympathize with the anxiety, let's be real. 'Sustainable pace' is subjective. Maybe they *did* have projects planned that got scrapped due to market shifts *beyond* their control. Maybe the new grads just weren't performing as expected. Layoffs suck, but sometimes it's a necessary correction. Accusing management of 'playing with lives' is a bit dramatic, don't you think? It's a business. They make decisions based on what they believe is best for the company's survival.
