Just got off a call with HR - what does this mean?

Had an unexpected 1:1 with HR this morning. They were pretty vague, just saying they wanted to 'discuss my role' and 'future alignment within the firm.' Didn't mention anything directly about layoffs, but the tone was very serious. They asked a lot of questions about my current projects, my performance over the last year, and my career aspirations. Left the call feeling pretty blindsided and honestly, a little worried. Is this a standard HR check-in, or am I reading too much into it? Anyone been through something similar recently? Trying to stay calm and professional, but this is definitely unsettling.

That sounds incredibly stressful. While HR might have standard procedures for performance reviews or role assessments, the vagueness and serious tone you described definitely lean towards something more significant. It's tough when they don't give clear answers, but focusing on your performance and aspirations during that conversation was the right move. Keep a record of what was discussed and try to follow up professionally if you don't hear anything concrete soon. Wishing you clarity on this.
