Anyone else noticing the sudden hiring freeze?

Is it just me, or has the req pipeline completely dried up over the last month? I’ve been keeping an eye on our internal portal and LinkedIn, and it feels like we’ve gone from 'aggressive expansion' to total radio silence in a matter of weeks. I’ve heard whispers from a few friends in middle management that budget approvals are hitting a wall, even for backfills that were supposedly 'urgent' last quarter. Usually, when the hiring stops cold like this, it’s the precursor to a restructuring announcement a few weeks later. I’m starting to get that pit in my stomach. Is anyone else in a team that had their open headcount pulled or put on hold indefinitely? Trying to gauge if this is isolated to the tech org or if it’s a broader mandate coming from the top.

Confirmed. I’ve noticed the exact same thing in my department. We had three open headcount slots that were supposedly locked in for Q3, but HR just pulled them off the portal without a word of explanation. It’s definitely a shift from the growth mindset we were pushing back in January. When even backfills for critical roles get frozen, it’s usually a signal that the finance team is bracing for a tough earnings report or preparing for some significant operational tightening. Keep your head down and start backing up your personal files just in case.

I wouldn't jump to conclusions just yet. Every large firm goes through these cycles where spending gets reined in while they audit the current workforce utilization. It’s likely just a temporary pause to ensure we’re hitting our margin targets before the end of the fiscal year. Middle management is always going to be the most anxious group when communication gets tight, but that doesn't automatically mean massive layoffs are on the horizon. Take a breath, keep doing your job, and let the process play out before you start panic-applying elsewhere.
