It is definitely happening across the board, not just in your division. I have been at MSCI long enough to see these cycles of 'streamlining,' and it always follows the same pattern: they axe middle management to make the books look leaner for the next quarter, then wonder why projects stall. The expectation that remaining leads just absorb all that extra workload without any budget or headcount increases is unsustainable. It feels like they are squeezing blood from a stone just to inflate margins for shareholders, and it is demoralizing for everyone left trying to keep things running.
I wouldn't overthink the 'something bigger' theory. This is just standard corporate playbook behavior at MSCI whenever management needs to hit specific targets. They label it operational efficiency to soften the blow, but it is just cost-cutting, pure and simple. The silence on backfilling roles is the real tell—they are testing to see if the firm can function at this reduced capacity permanently. If the current teams manage to keep the lights on despite being overworked, those roles are never coming back. Just keep your head down and focus on your deliverables until the next reorg rolls around.
