RTO enforcement getting aggressive - sign of cuts?

Is anyone else feeling the heat regarding the new RTO mandate? My manager started tracking badge-ins religiously last week, and there’s a lot of chatter that they’re using the data to identify who they want to target if a formal RIF happens later this quarter. It feels like they’re trying to force people to resign voluntarily to avoid paying severance. The office feels like a ghost town despite the forced attendance, and the vibe is just incredibly off. Every time leadership sets up a town hall, my first instinct is to check my calendar for a follow-up 1:1. Anyone hearing anything concrete from the higher-ups, or is this just standard corporate theater to keep us on edge?

The shift in management style is pretty transparent at this point. Tracking badge-ins so aggressively isn't about office culture or collaboration; it’s a standard playbook move to create a paper trail for performance-based exits. If you aren't compliant with the new mandate, you are essentially painting a target on your back for the next round of cuts. It is definitely a quiet way to encourage voluntary attrition so they can trim headcount without the legal and financial burden of a formal layoff package.

Honestly, the vibe at the office has been miserable lately. It feels less like we are there to be productive and more like we are just punching a clock to prove we still have jobs. Leadership keeps pushing this narrative about 'team synergy,' but we all know it’s just data collection. Expecting people to commute just to sit on Zoom calls in a cubicle is nonsensical. If they’re looking for excuses to let people go, I wouldn’t be surprised if these badge reports are the first thing they pull.
