Stuck in limbo: Hiring freezes and project cancellations

My team just got word that our project roadmap for the second half of the year is being 're-evaluated' indefinitely. We were supposed to be backfilling two senior engineering roles, but HR suddenly pulled the requisitions without any explanation. When we pressed for details, leadership gave us the standard 'macroeconomic headwinds' spiel. It feels like they are tightening the belt without actually announcing anything publicly. Anyone else seeing open roles get nuked or budget for contractors vanish overnight? I’m worried that this is the precursor to a broader restructuring event before the fiscal year ends. I’ve been here long enough to know that when the hiring freeze hits and the project funding gets pulled, the layoffs usually follow shortly after. Trying to decide if I should jump ship now before the market gets flooded with more of our staff, or wait it out and see if this is just a temporary correction. Any advice from those who have been through a NetApp cycle before?

Same thing happened to us last week. We were mid-interview with a solid candidate when the req was closed without notice. It is frustrating because the workload hasn't decreased, but we are being told to 'do more with less' while the roadmap shifts underneath us. The lack of transparency from leadership is the worst part. It feels like they are keeping us in the dark to avoid a formal headcount reduction announcement, but the writing is clearly on the wall. Just keep your head down and start quietly updating your resume, because this silence usually precedes a larger round of cuts.

I’ve been tracking the internal shifts lately, and it definitely feels like they are hunkering down for a rough Q3 and Q4. Budgeting has become incredibly rigid, and any non-essential project is being shelved to protect the margins. It’s a standard corporate maneuver when the numbers start looking soft. If your project isn't directly tied to revenue growth or a major product launch, it’s going to be on the chopping block. Use this time to document your wins, but don't count on those backfills opening back up anytime soon. It is a waiting game now.
