Looking ahead: What to do if things go sideways here?

Okay, so nothing concrete has happened, but the constant rumors are starting to get to me. I've been with Newmont for 8 years, started out in the field and moved into a planning role at HQ. I've seen a few cycles in mining, but the economic climate feels different this time. If, and I'm really hoping it's a big IF, layoffs do hit, I want to be prepared. Anyone have thoughts on what severance packages might look like based on tenure? Or any tips for brushing up the resume and prepping for interviews while still employed? Just want to have a plan B ready, you know? Feels a bit like we're all just waiting for something to happen.

Hang in there. It's understandable to feel anxious with all the chatter, especially after eight years with the company. While I can't speak to specific severance details, as those can vary widely and are often negotiated, I can say that having a well-updated resume is always a smart move, regardless of company performance. Focus on quantifiable achievements in your planning role. Networking within the industry, even just casually, could also prove beneficial down the line.

Eight years is a solid chunk of time. If layoffs were to happen, I'd expect a package to reflect that tenure, potentially including extended health benefits and outplacement services. Don't discount the value of your field experience either; it gives you a perspective many HQ roles lack. As for prepping, think about transferable skills. Your planning experience is likely applicable to other sectors beyond mining, especially if you can highlight project management and strategic thinking.
