I've found that proactive networking has been key for me. Don't just wait for opportunities to appear. Reach out to people in departments that interest you, even informally, to learn about their work and potential openings. Attending internal company events and training sessions also helps build visibility. Highlighting projects where you've demonstrated adaptability and a willingness to learn new skills on your resume or in conversations can also make a big difference when seeking internal transfers or promotions.
It can definitely feel a bit siloed at times. My advice? Be vocal about your aspirations. Let your manager know you're interested in exploring other avenues within the company. Sometimes, taking on stretch assignments or volunteer projects that expose you to different areas can be a great way to gain experience and demonstrate your capabilities beyond your current role. Don't underestimate the power of seeking mentorship from those who have successfully navigated internal moves.
