Northern Trust: When does the constant restructuring stop?

Honestly, the internal communication we get is so sanitized it’s insulting. Another batch of people let go, and all we get is some vague email about 'aligning our workforce strategy.' We all know what that means. I’ve been with NT for a while now and I’ve never seen morale this low. You walk into the office or jump on a call and you can tell everyone is just waiting for the other shoe to drop. It’s hard to focus on actual projects when you’re constantly looking over your shoulder wondering if you’re next on the spreadsheet. The irony of the 'culture' emails being sent out while people are being handed boxes is not lost on any of us. Does anyone actually believe we’ve reached the end of these cuts, or is this just going to be a rolling thing for the rest of the year?

The perpetual 'strategic realignment' has become the company's favorite euphemism for gutting departments to boost quarterly margins. It is exhausting to watch talented colleagues get pushed out while leadership parades around talking about innovation and growth. The lack of transparency isn't just frustrating; it’s toxic. Everyone is burned out and doing the work of three people, yet we’re expected to act like everything is business as usual. It’s no longer about the people or the culture; it’s strictly a numbers game, and the human cost is clearly irrelevant to those at the top.

I’ve learned to stop reading those corporate emails entirely because they never contain a shred of truth. At this point, the constant reorganizations feel like a rudderless ship trying to avoid a collision by throwing the passengers overboard. If you’re feeling demoralized, just know that you aren't alone—the entire firm is vibrating with anxiety. Start polishing your resume and keep your head down until you find an exit. There is no loyalty here anymore, so stop waiting for things to go back to how they used to be.
