Is the 'no layoff' era officially over at Nucor?

I remember when Nucor used to pride itself on never doing mass layoffs regardless of the cycle. Now it feels like we’re just another corporate machine churning through bodies to make the quarterly numbers look better for the shareholders. Between the Chicago cuts a while back and now this Eufaula news, the writing is on the wall. I’m starting to wonder if the golden days are truly behind us. Does anyone else feel like the job security we were promised is just a ghost story now? I’m seriously considering polishing up the resume before my department becomes the next target on the list. Anyone else feeling the itch to jump ship before things get worse?

It is honestly depressing to watch the culture shift this way. For years, the 'no-layoff' philosophy was the primary reason so many of us stayed, even when other mills were offering better hourly rates. It felt like a true partnership between leadership and the floor. Seeing management prioritize short-term quarterly gains over the very people who built this company's reputation is a slap in the face. If they abandon the core values that made Nucor unique, they really are just another faceless conglomerate. The trust is broken.

You are reading way too much into the market cycle. Every steel company has to adjust capacity when demand drops, and acting like Nucor is suddenly a 'corporate machine' ignores the reality of the current economy. They have done more to support their workforce during downturns than any other producer in the industry. While the recent news is tough, it does not mean the entire foundation has crumbled. They are simply trying to keep the company viable for everyone else in the long run. Keep your head down and focus on your work.
