Is the 'zero layoffs' culture actually sustainable?

We keep hearing the leadership mantra about not wanting to lay anyone off, and honestly, it’s refreshing compared to what my friends at Google or Meta are going through. But with the sheer number of people we’ve been onboarding over the last eighteen months, I have to wonder how long this holds up. The performance expectations are through the roof. I’m seeing teams double in size, and the communication overhead is becoming a nightmare. Is it just me, or does it feel like we’re bloating up just to keep the headcount numbers looking good for the optics? I’m genuinely concerned that if the market cools even slightly, we’re going to hit a wall. Does anyone here actually believe we can maintain this trajectory without eventually having to do a 'restructuring' event? I love the culture here, but I’ve been around long enough to know that nothing lasts forever in this industry. Curious if anyone in older orgs feels like the cracks are starting to show.

It is definitely starting to feel like we are reaching a breaking point. When the company adds so many people so quickly, the culture of 'no layoffs' stops feeling like a perk and starts feeling like a hidden management trap. Everyone is terrified of falling into the bottom percentage, so the performance pressure has become toxic. We aren't really collaborating anymore; we're just managing politics and trying to justify our existence while the infrastructure struggles to keep up with the bloat. It feels like a bubble waiting to burst.

Honestly, I think you're overthinking it. We are printing money faster than any other company in the history of tech. As long as the AI boom continues and our margins stay this insane, leadership can afford to keep the headcount inflated. Enjoy the stability while it lasts and stop worrying about the overhead. Yes, the pace is exhausting and the onboarding is chaotic, but I would take this stress over the mass-email layoff notifications my friends at other firms received any day of the week. Focus on your projects and stop looking for ghosts.
