Management is getting awfully pushy about RTO again

Is it just me, or does the sudden push to get everyone back in the office five days a week feel like a precursor to something else? They keep talking about 'collaboration' and 'alignment,' but we all know that’s just corporate speak for weeding out the people who aren't fully committed or looking for a reason to shrink the footprint. Every time they start squeezing the remote policy, it’s usually followed by a round of 'voluntary' departures or a silent reorg. I’ve started tracking the vacant desks near my department, and the numbers aren't exactly pointing to growth. I’m tired of the vague emails about productivity when we’ve been hitting our KPIs just fine from home. It feels like they are trying to make the environment unpleasant enough that people quit on their own so they don't have to pay severance. If anyone has seen actual numbers or knows if they’re planning a formal reduction, please drop a hint. I’m not waiting around to be a statistic.

The 'collaboration' narrative is getting old, especially when most of our actual work involves staring at spreadsheets or hopping on Zoom calls with teams in different time zones anyway. It feels incredibly transparent. They know that by forcing the five-day requirement, a certain percentage of the staff will just leave on their own, saving them the headache and cost of actual severance packages. If you see the vacant desk counts creeping up, it’s not a coincidence. It is definitely a quiet restructuring strategy disguised as culture building.

Honestly, I think you’re spot on. Every time OXY starts tightening the screws on attendance, the rumor mill goes into overdrive for good reason. They are obsessed with efficiency metrics lately, and squeezing the remote policy is the oldest trick in the book to thin the herd without announcing a formal layoff. Just keep your head down, keep your options open, and update your resume. If they are pushing this hard, they have already mapped out who they want to cut, and the office mandate is just the final filter.
