Just got laid off... severance package Qs

Well, it finally happened. Got the call this morning. After 5 years on the Forward Deployed team, I'm out. Honestly, I saw it coming with the recent org changes. I'm mostly just trying to figure out the severance package details. They're offering 2 months base salary plus a month for every year of service. Is that standard? Also, what about unvested stock options? Do they typically accelerate vesting, or am I just SOL? Any advice from others who've been through this here would be greatly appreciated. Feeling pretty numb right now.

Sorry to hear about the layoff. That severance sounds pretty standard, maybe even a little generous compared to what I've seen. As for the stock options, it really depends on your grant agreement. Some companies will offer partial or full acceleration, especially after 5 years, but many do not. Dig out those documents and read the fine print! If it's not explicitly stated, try negotiating. Doesn't hurt to ask, especially if you have a good performance record.

Honestly, that severance package sounds like the bare minimum. Two months base is insulting after 5 years of service, even with the extra month per year. They probably factor in the low cost of living in most areas they operate. Definitely try to negotiate for more. As for the stock, kiss that goodbye; they rarely accelerate vesting in these situations. Start networking and prepping your resume. Time to land something better!
